Be Holy, Because I Am Holy

Suppose a nation in some distant region should take the Bible for their only law book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited!  Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love and reverence toward Almighty God…. What a Utopia, what a Paradise would this region be.

                                                                                                                John Adams

Many of our great colonial Patriarchs had great faith in God.  Many yearned for desire to be Christ like.  To be ‘a holy nation’ in a land of liberty that allowed them to do just that.

1 Peter 1:13 says

There fore, prepare your minds for action; be self-controlled; set your hope fully on the grace to be given you when Jesus Christ is revealed.  As obedient children, do not conform to the evil desires you had when you lived in ignorance.  But just as he who called you is holy, so be holy in all you do; for it is written: “Be holy, because I am holy.”

The desire for our nation to be independent was not just to separate itself from England, but be in a land where we could serve God wholeheartedly.

What we are not often taught in school is that the men, our great Patriarchs, were often writing of how we should be a holy nation.  Our independence should be won for dependence on God.  Thus, Adams wrote what a nation would be like if it’s declaration was the Bible, “their only law book”.

God has called us to be holy because He is holy.  Let’s examine our hearts today as a nation to make a stand that because God is holy, we will be holy.
